Allantoin
Allantoin or Glyoxyldiureide or 5-Ureidohydantoin is used as an ingredient in over-the-counter cosmetics. Allantoin is safe, non-toxic, compatible with cosmetic raw materials. It is frequently present in toothpaste, mouthwash, and other oral hygiene products, in shampoos, lipsticks, anti-acne products, sun care products, and clarifying lotions, various cosmetic lotions and creams, and other cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

Appearance: White crystalline solid.
Odor: Odorless.
Assay: 98.5% minimum.
pH: 4.5 - 6 (5% in water @ 20C.
Melting Point: 225C to 230C with decomposition literature.
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water. Soluble in Alcohol.

IDENTIFICATION
A. Infrared Absorption
B. Thin-Layer Chromatographic Identification Test: To meet the requirement.
Residue on Ignition: NMT 0.1%
Organic Impurities: To pass the test.
Acidity or Alkalinity:
Sample solution: 5 mg/mL in carbon dioxide-free water.
Analysis: To 5 mL of the Sample solution add 5 mL of water, 0.1 mL of methyl red and 0.2 mL of 0.01 M sodium hydroxide.
Acceptance criteria: A yellow color is observed. The solution turns red upon the addition of 0.4 mL of 0.01 M hydrochloric acid.
Loss on Drying: Dry a sample at 105C to constant weight: it loses NMT 0.1% of its weight.
Reducing Substances:
Sample solution: 1.0 g of Allantoin in 10 mL of water. Shake for 2 min, and filter.
Analysis: To the Sample solution add 1.5 mL of 0.02 M potassium permanganate.
Acceptance criteria: The solution remains violet for at least 10 min.
