Alanine is an amino acid commonly found as a component of total parenteral nutrition. Alanine or L-alpha-alanine or D-alpha-alanine is a non-essential amino acid. It is an important source of energy for muscle tissue, the brain and central nervous system; strengthens the immune system by producing antibodies; helps in the metabolism of sugars and organic acids.

DESCRIPTION
L-Alanine occurs as a white crystalline powder. It is freely soluble in water, sparingly soluble in alcohol, and insoluble in ether. The pH of a 1:20 aqueous solution is between 5.5 and 7.0.

Identification: The infrared absorption spectrum of the sample exhibits relative maxima at the same wavelengths as those of a typical spectrum as shown in the section on Infrared Spectra, using the same test conditions as specified therein.
Assay: Not less than 98.5% and not more than 101.5% of C3H7NO2, calculated on the dried basis.
Lead: Not more than 5 mg/kg.
Loss on Drying: Not more than 0.3%.
Optical (Specific) Rotation: [α]D20°: Between +13.5° and +15.5°, calculated on the dried basis; or [α]D25°: between +13.2° and +15.2°, calculated on the dried basis.
