DESCRIPTION
L-Threonine occurs as a white, crystalline powder. It is freely soluble in water, and insoluble in alcohol, in ether, and in chloroform. It melts with decomposition at about 256C.
Function: Nutrient.
REQUIREMENTS
Identification: The infrared absorption spectrum of the sample exhibits relative maxima at the same wavelengths as those of a typical spectrum as shown in the section on Infrared Spectra, using the same test conditions as specified therein.
Assay: Not less than 98.5% and not more than 101.5% of C4H9NO3, calculated on the dried basis.
Lead: Not more than 5 mg/kg.
Loss on Drying: Not more than 0.2%.
Optical (Specific) Rotation: [α]D20°: Between −26.5° and −29.0°, calculated on the dried basis; or [α]D25°: Between −25.8° and −28.8°, calculated on the dried basis.
Residue on Ignition: Not more than 0.1%.
