Sulfuric Acid or Sulphuric Acid
CAS Number: 7664-93-9
Molecular Formula: H2SO4
Molecular Weight: 98.08
Sulfuric Acid or Sulphuric AcidSulfuric Acid USP NF Grade Specifications:
H2SO4 --- 98.08
Sulfuric acid CAS 7664-93-9Sulfuric Acid contains not less than 95.0 percent and not more than 98.0 percent, by weight, of H2SO4.
[Caution: When Sulfuric Acid is to be mixed with other liquids, always add it to the diluent and exercise great caution.]
Packaging and storage: Preserve in tight containers.
Identification: It responds to the tests for Sulfate.
Residue on ignition: Evaporate 22 mL (40 g) to dryness, and ignite: not more than 2 mg of residue remains (0.005%).
Chloride: A dilution of 1.1 mL (2.0 g) in water shows no more chloride than corresponds to 0.15 mL of 0.020 N hydrochloric acid (0.005%).
Arsenic: --- (1 ppm).
Heavy metals: -- the limit is 5 ppm.
Reducing substances: Carefully dilute 4.4 mL (8.0 g) with about 50 mL of ice cold water, keeping the solution cold during the addition. Add 0.10 mL of 0.10 N potassium permanganate: the solution remains pink for 5 minutes.
Assay: Place about 1 mL of Sulfuric Acid in an accurately weighed, glass-stoppered flask containing about 20 mL of water, and weigh again to obtain the weight of the test specimen. Dilute with about 25 mL of water, cool, add methyl orange, and titrate with 1 N sodium hydroxide. Each mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 49.04 mg of H2SO4.
Sulfuric Acid FCC Food Grade:
H2SO4 --- Formula weight 98.07
INS: 513 CAS 7664-93-9DESCRIPTION
Sulfuric Acid occurs as a clear, colorless or slightly brown, oily liquid. It is very caustic and corrosive. It is miscible with water and with alcohol with the generation of much heat and contraction in volume. Sulfuric Acid should be added cautiously to the diluent when mixed with other liquids. Some commercially available concentrations of Sulfuric Acid are expressed in degrees Baume and others (above 93.0%) as a percentage of H2SO4.
Function: Acidifier.REQUIREMENTS
Identification: A sample gives positive tests for Sulfate.
Assay: Not less than the minimum or within the range of Baume or the percentage of H2SO4 claimed or implied by the vendor.
Arsenic: Not more than 3 mg/kg.
Chloride: Not more than 0.005%.
Iron: Not more than 0.02%.
Lead: Not more than 5 mg/kg.
Nitrate: Not more than 10 mg/kg.
Reducing Substances (as SO2): Passes test.
Selenium: Not more than 0.002%.
Sulfuric Acid or Sulphuric Acid is also supplied as per Analytical Reagent and BP Ph Eur grade.
